nVIDIA's 9-series Readying Up

The guys in green are at it again, according to rumourmill Fudzilla, who recently stated that nVIDIA will be releasing their highly anticipated flagship behemoth, the 9800GTX.  Codenamed G100, the specs point to a card that will most likely trounce any form of competition. Here's the rumoured specs of the card:

  • 65nm process
  • 256 shader processors
  • 780MHz core clock
  • 3200MHz memory clock
  • 512-bit memory width
  • 2048MB (256X8) GDDR5 chips
  • GDDR5 @ 0.25-0.5ns
  • Dual DVI-out
  • Supports DX 10.1, VP3
  • 15-25% lower TDP than 8800GTS

While the GDDR5 specs and supply might have us a little worried, Samsung, Hynix and Infineon have been working on the tech for awhile now, and we are starting to see engineering samples released already.  How well they will keep up with demand is another story.

This won't be the first 9-series card to hit the streets, however. That crown will be taken by the 9800GX2, a successor to the 7950GX2, sporting dual PCB's, 1GB GDDR3 and a cut down version of the G92 that powers the midrange 8800GT.

That's not all though, as we work down the line, news of the midrange replacement, and favourite son of their line up (according to the money made at least), the 9600 series has started to prop up. Sporting a 256-bit memory bus, this baby will finally be able to pull it to the big guys, so keep an eye here for benchies when they arrive.
