Things to do after installing Windows Vista
- Disable UAC
The UAC is Windows's new anti-idiot control. It stops programs from changing sensitive settings. It is also very annoying for even intermediate users.
Control Panel -> User Accounts and Family Safety -> User Accounts (Vista view) or
Control Panel -> User Accounts (Classic view)
Down the bottom select 'Turn on or off User Account Control' to disable the UAC. - Disable Firewall/Security Alerts
If you disable the firewall, you will be bugged by a warning in the system-tray.
Control Panel -> Security -> Security Center (Vista view) or
Control Panel -> Security Center (Classic view)
Then select 'Change the way Security Center alerts me'. - Add 'run' button
The Start-Menu hides the 'Run' button, used by many experienced users.
Control Panel -> Appearance and Personalization -> Taskbar and Start Menu (Vista view) or
Control Panel -> Taskbar and Start Menu (Classic view)
Click the 'Start Menu' tab, press 'Customize'.
Scroll down, check the 'Run Command' checkbox.
OPTIONAL: If you don't like newly installed programs to be highlighted, then uncheck 'Highlight newly installed programs' - Restore Menus
Windows Vista hides the 'main menu' by default, this can be told to permanently stay, else access by pressing 'Alt'
Open up file explorer, press 'Alt' then select 'Tools' -> 'Folder Options'. Select 'View' then enable the second option 'Always show menus'.
